Support for Refugees is a project that is very dear to SFLIG Volunteers. This program gives support to refugees in Ghana. The Budumburam refugee camp is a home for Liberians who fled their country during the civil war. “https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buduburam” There are poor living conditions at the camp due to the high rate of unemployment. Most of the people don’t have any meaningful jobs, making it difficult to care for their children. Some of the kids also have no parents because of the war. A school and a care center have been established to educate the children.   A few schools have been established by individuals to help educate the children. Most of these schools are understaffed and there are no professional teachers. The majority of the children can’t afford the tuition fee and other learning requirements. This makes it difficult to employ qualified teachers.   SFLIG Volunteers therefore assist the refugee camp with volunteers.  These volunteers support the few educators and administrators who work in educating the pupils. Volunteers assist in teaching subjects which include English, computer science, arithmetic, French, and others. They also help with physical education activities like sports and aerobics. Since there is a great need at the camp, volunteers can bring some educational materials, some gently used clothing, school bags, shoes, socks, etc. Volunteers participate in the feeding program by preparing and distributing meals to the kids. The main goal is to help children in the camp continue to gain education to escape poverty.
