What to Expect

At SFLIG Volunteers, we put the desires and well-being of our volunteers first, and we are committed to ensuring they have all the necessary requirements for feeling content and safe.

A visa letter and associated documents will be provided prior to your departure. We will arrange an airport pickup when you arrive and drop you off when you leave. A safety briefing and orientation will be provided when you arrive, and accommodation, food (mainly breakfast and dinner, and occasionally lunch) will be provided. You will have 24/7 access to a local support team and program supervision. A local SIM card for 24/7 internet access will be provided. After completion, you will be given a certificate and a recommendation letter. Lastly, we will donate to the placement on your behalf and to the girl’s support/sanitary towels fund.

Airport Pickup at Kotoka International Airport

A representative from our organization will be waiting for you at the airport arrival hall, holding a sign with the names of volunteers or the identification method previously discussed prior to boarding the flight.

Accommodation

Volunteers will stay either at the SFLIG Volunteers House or with a host family arranged by SFLIG Volunteers. This option is safe and allows volunteers to adjust, adapt, and immerse themselves in Ghanaian culture and the local community where they will be doing their volunteer work. The selection of a host family will depend on the information provided in the application form that the volunteer submits.

These host families have been thoroughly vetted and have good records and health. Regular checks are conducted to ensure that they continue to meet our standards. Accommodation costs are included in the program fee. For groups of six or more interns working on the same or similar projects, accommodations in hostels and dormitories can often be arranged. Each volunteer will have their own  bed, along with essential furnishings like a table and chair, will be provided. Volunteers will have access to amenities such as a TV, radio, electricity, kitchen, toilet and bath facilities, and clean water.

The SFLIG Volunteer House and our projects are located in Krispo City, Kasoa, which is about a one-hour drive from the airport and approximately 45 minutes from central Accra and the business district.

Food & Beverages

Host families are responsible for providing breakfast and dinner everyday. Due to the distance between project area and home lunch can’t be provided and volunteers are advice to go with a snack. The foods served mainly consist of continental dishes comprising rice, chicken, beef, tea, coffee, bread, eggs, soup, potato, oaths, fruits, fish, etc. Local food
That is mainly made from the above, tubers, beans and/or maize is served alongside. It is also very common for an intern to find a familiar dish in restaurants in different cities. Volunteers are provided with well treated water which is purchased from certified producers of hygienically bottled or bagged water.
Volunteers with special dietary needs like vegetarian should let us know, so we can prepare their preferred meal. Those with allergies should let us know too.
During weekends volunteers make their own special foods or eat in a nearby restaurant or order for any continental food to be delivered to them.
